Thanks to Search and Rescue Dogs

It's hard to imagine it's been 10 years since that tragic day of 9/11 - a day that changed our lives forever. It's significant events like this that we all think back to where we were, and what we were doing when it occured.

Leashes and Lovers wants to pay tribute to all those who lost their lives. And we want to thank and recognize the volunteers and personnel who helped in the clean up and search & rescue efforts.

At ground zero, there were more than 300 search and rescue dogs & their handlers including 13 canine members of the Search Dog Foundation under the Federal Emergency Management Agency who worked hard to bring hope and closure to some families.

And, thanks as well to the countless therapy dogs visiting hospitals, schools, and counseling centers to help heal hearts and bring a smile.

MY STORY - WHAT'S YOURS?

While most of us don't have a search and rescue dog - I'm sure your dog brought you solace just by being your companion. Mine certainly did. I had just gotten my Greyhound Shiraz in 2001 from a CT racetrack.

The week prior to 9/11, I got a call to audition for a web show about Wall Street and the stock market. They asked me if I wanted to come 9/10 or 9/11. I had an appointment with my dog on 9/11 so I said, "Let's do Monday." While I wouldn't have been in a tower, I was glad to not be so close in the area or in the subway. As I watched the towers fall from my rooftop on 25th St. & 6th Ave., it all seemed surreal.

That evening, I was glad to have my new dog Shiraz by my side as we walked to curbside candlelight memorials and to view the hundreds of photos already posted of those who couldn't find their loved ones. I'll never forget how having her made it seem more assuring.
