Are You Red with Envy?
Have you ever coveted a “dog’s life,” with emotion bordering on envy? Well, when it comes to Conchita, if this isn’t one lucky Dawg!
Conchita, the Chihuahua and the staff are left the keys to an $8.3 million dollar mansion, a $3 million dollar trust and other funds totaling some $26 million. If I didn’t know better, I would think the “Con” in Conchita meant conniving – but then that would be giving anthropomorphic attributes to a tiny dog incapable of swindling millions from her owner.
Conchita’s owner, Gail Posner died in March at the age of 67 leaving her litter of a biological son, $1 million. But, it remains to be seen how long the pooches will fetch the fortune as Bret Carr, Posner’s son, has filed a lawsuit.
Millions are being divvied up between Posner’s housekeeper/personal assistant and bodyguards. The housekeeper gets to live in the seven-bedroom mansion for free while caring for Conchita and Posner’s two less-adored dogs – sounding like her step-children.
Her son’s lawsuit may have merit as Posner’s will is reminiscent of the late real estate mogul Leona Helmsley, who left $12 million to her Maltese “Trouble”. A judge later reduced the dog’s inheritance to $2 million.
When Posner was alive, she showered the Chihuahua with luxury gifts, including $15,000 Cartier necklaces, weekly spa appointments, and even a gold Cadillac Escalade. I’ll take a doggie bag on this one…really, any leftovers?!?
WHAT ABOUT YOU AND YOUR DOGS?
What are some preparations you can take to make sure your dog(s) will be provided for in the event of a tragedy to you.
It is a good idea to have a plan in place because when it comes to pets, the laws aren't quite so clear in most states. The laws pertaining to animals in most places is that they are considered personal property and if you aren't there to care for them or have determined who will, they may be heading to a shelter in hopes of adoption which may or may not happen.
I advise that you have it spelled out in writing:
a. Who will care for your pet(s) in every aspect such as where and who they will live with.
And, while you don't need to leave your pet millions of dollars, setting aside a fund for their care is wise such as a year of vet visits, and food to help ease the transition to a new owner.
